In the heart of Playa de Las Américas, residents and merchants on Noelia Afonso Cabrera Street are demanding the Arona Town Hall to clarify the legality of a bus stop for tourist vehicles near the Coral California hotel. They claim that the space lacks a permit or license number on the plate, despite the presence of a vertical sign indicating bus parking and yellow lines on the pavement.
A letter, along with supporting documents, was submitted to the City Council on December 26 by workers and residents. They urged the authorities to convert a privately-used space at 2 Noelia Afonso Cabrera Avenue into a public area.
Irene López Baños, representing the affected individuals, revealed that the City Council has not provided a response yet. She stated that they will request a report signed by the Traffic Councilor who approved the establishment of the stop “at least four years ago.”
Penalties
The spokesperson for the affected parties highlighted the “outrage” felt by residents and merchants on this central street in Playa de Las Américas. They pointed out that locals are fined by the Local Police for parking in that area, questioning if “someone is being compensated” for using the parking space “without a permit or license number.”
Irene López stressed that “the hotel has the option for buses to drop off tourists at the entrance, but it’s more convenient this way,” demanding that if there are no available spots, a loading or unloading zone should be designated for any driver to use.
While awaiting a response from the Arona City Council, residents and workers are contemplating further protest actions. They admitted that “patience wears thin, and many neighbours and businesses are fed up with paying taxes only to endure these situations.”
