SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 1st March (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Cabildo has decided to honour the Tenerife Mountain Group by awarding them the esteemed Gold Medal of the Island of Tenerife. This recognition is in appreciation of their significant and impactful altruistic efforts over the span of more than six decades.
This Friday, the Plenary Session of the island council unanimously approved a motion to kickstart the process of granting the honorary Gold Medal of the Island of Tenerife to the Tenerife Mountain Group in accordance with the regulations governing honorary distinctions set forth by the Island Council of Tenerife.
Ever since its inception, the Tenerife Mountain Group has been actively engaged in a wide range of activities such as camping, canyoning, climbing, spelunking, mountaineering, hiking, trekking, and travelling.
Moreover, the group has dedicated sections focused on environmental initiatives and children, with a recent intensified commitment towards environmental conservation and protection. Noteworthy is their close collaboration with the Natural Environment division of the Cabildo, whereby they have pledged to take care of an area in Mesa Mota (La Laguna) and have been actively involved in environmental education by partnering with educational institutions to instil environmental values among the youth.
The journey of the Tenerife Mountain Group commenced on the 4th of October, 1963, during a gathering at Plaza de Weyler in Santa Cruz de Tenerife where the group’s 14 founding members and initial partners convened. These individuals were: Cesáreo Tejedor Pérez, Narciso Figueroa Rodríguez, Matías López Vázquez, Alejandro Tranque Santos, Edmundo Herrero Rello, Rafael López Reynes, Alberto Hernández González, Ana Silva Bello Brito, Armando Betancourt González, Ramón Braulio Lugo González, Juan José Delgado Hernández, Manuel Lorenzo Guadarrama, José Vargas González, and Cesar Tejedor Salguero.
Over the years, the group has expanded, now counting more than 300 members, as per information shared by the Cabildo.
Cesáreo Tejedor Pérez served as the group’s inaugural president, with the first edition of the ‘Faro to Faro’ march named in his honour being organised the following year, a tradition that persists to this day.
