SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29th February (EUROPA PRESS) –
The change of name of two chambers of the Chamber was announced on Thursday by Astrid Pérez, the president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands. The aim is to have inclusive names that do not exclude anyone, regardless of gender.
With the unanimous support of the Board, the Chamber of Presidents will now be known as the Chamber of Presidencies. This change is to ensure that the women who have held the presidency in the history of this institution are no longer overlooked.
The Chamber of Deputies, which previously neglected the presence of women, will now be known as the Eight Islands Chamber to have a more inclusive name.
The official renaming ceremony is scheduled for 7th March, during the events organised for ‘International Women’s Day’. This change reflects the Parliament’s commitment to equality, which includes being mindful of language usage, especially in the names of public institution departments.
“We advocate for the use of non-sexist language that acknowledges women’s presence and achievements. Previously, our Parliament only dedicated a room to its male presidents. This change ensures that the legacy of women like Carolina Darias in the IX Legislature is also recognised,” highlighted Astrid Pérez.
The unanimous decision within the Board to rename the Chamber of Deputies to the Eight Islands Chamber is a testament to the commitment to inclusivity in the parliamentary composition.
The First Equality Plan for Women and Men of the Parliament of the Canary Islands has introduced guidelines for employing non-sexist and inclusive language throughout the Chamber’s activities.
These guidelines have been distributed in a manual to all Chamber staff and Parliamentary Groups in the current XI Legislature.
