SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29th February (EUROPA PRESS) –
An agreement has been announced by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo of La Gomera to enhance the educational facilities in the island. The aim is to co-finance adaptation projects in the network of schools across the six municipalities.
According to councilor Poli Suárez, “This is fantastic news that aligns with our Ministry’s commitment to strengthen ties and collaboration with local governments, through FECAM and FECAI, to collectively enhance the education system in the islands, specifically focusing on infrastructure quality.”
President Casimiro Curbelo added that plans for around twelve projects in all municipalities are set for implementation this year. It was also noted that proposals from school management and municipalities will be considered to consolidate them into a unified document with a financial breakdown. “This approach will improve our responsiveness and efficiency in addressing long-standing issues, and the Cabildo, despite lacking competency in this area, is determined to contribute,” he stated.
An initial investment exceeding one million euros is foreseen, with potential for further expansion once a comprehensive document with all proposals is ready, “working closely with the Ministry of Education, municipalities, and educational institutions to enhance educational standards and the benefits of these facilities,” he added.
Curbelo and Suárez convened a meeting at the Cabildo with the island mayors, where they announced that in the upcoming weeks, technicians from the Regional Ministry specializing in infrastructure and sports will visit Gomero schools to assess their deficiencies onsite, determine required funding accurately, and expedite the resolution process.
SCHOOL FACILITIES
Prior to the mayor’s meeting, the councilor and president engaged with school directors on the island, following a strategy of direct engagement and attentiveness towards the entire educational community in the archipelago. Suárez highlighted the presence of most of the team in La Gomera, alongside insular director Elena Carballo, deputy ministers José Manuel Cabrera and Ángel Sabroso, and general directors overseeing various aspects of education and sports.
