How was Teide born? What demon does it hide? Who is Guayota, and what did the Guanches tell about him? The Teide National Park is an enigmatic space, wrapped in the legends of the aborigines who inhabited the island and worshipped the Teide volcano, which aroused the gods’ fury and marked a turning point in the island’s history.

With Volcano Teide, the National Park reveals its lesser-known side, gradually explored through trails with the best views of Tenerife, home to 212 plant species, 58 of which are Canary endemics, and three are unique to this area.

The ‘Teide Legend Tour’ proposal offers the best routes to see Teide, such as the ‘Los Roques de García; at the feet of ancient giants’ trail, which runs from the Mirador de la Ruleta to the base of Teide. The hiking trail options in Teide are tailored to each visitor, including proposals like the ‘Montaña de Majúa; the power of a small volcano’ trail that skirts this volcanic cone and stands out for its light colour.

The Teide volcano in Tenerife is the cradle of science, history, legend, and innovation, as showcased by Volcano Teide, a company with 65 years of experience, with decades of commitment to sharing the details of this territory authentically and advocating for its sustainable protection. Did you know that Teide is a sacred mountain? Among the curiosities of Teide, the third tallest volcano in the world, stands out for exceptional climatic conditions for certain plants and animals, found only in this corner of the planet. Additionally, Teide casts the longest shadow in the world over the sea, has been the backdrop for various films and movie shoots, and serves as a study site and natural laboratory where the possibility of life on Mars is being analysed.

What to See in Tenerife: ‘Science and Legend’

A Guanches mummy, the story of gods and humans, the legend behind the eruption 1,000 years ago, and the science and mythology surrounding Spain’s highest volcano are just a few examples of what the Visitors Centre of Teide Cable Car holds in the ‘Science and Legend’ exhibition.

The routes of the audio-guided tour to Teide culminate in this exhibition, included in your tour, which tells the legend behind the eruption that formed the ‘hat’ of the Teide peak, where the volcano demon, Guayota, was imprisoned, now sleeping awaiting release from one of the world’s most active volcanoes.

The indigenous people of Tenerife witnessed the “awakening of the volcano,” a powerful explosion, after which magma spewed from the depths of “Echeyde” in what they narrated as a duel of the gods, now understood through science and vulcanology.

The exhibition recounts, from both the scientific interpretation and the legend, the different phases of that eruption, which has become one of the most interesting and entertaining stops in the Teide National Park, designed for the whole family. This display, featuring a reproduction of a Guanche mummy, presents the two perspectives of the eruption, the mythological and the scientific, converging to create a fascinating experience.

With the purchase of the self-guided tour ‘Teide Legend Tour’ to Teide, all companions can enjoy free entry to the ‘Science and Legend’ exhibition located in the Teide Cable Car Visitor Centre, and rediscover the Teide eruption like never before, also in the favourite comic book version of the little ones.
