The Fasnia Town Council has released a statement this Thursday announcing water consumption restrictions due to water scarcity. This decision, led by Mayor Javier González, aims to tackle the climatic conditions affecting the Canary Islands in recent months, with the main goal of ensuring access to drinking water for all residents.
Among the measures implemented are the prohibition of car washing except at gas stations, along with restrictions on facade cleaning and pool refilling, ponds, reservoirs, or tanks. Moreover, the use of showers on beaches is banned, and residents are advised against using potable water for irrigation. Additionally, new registrations for water meters from the local reservoir have been put on hold.
This announcement comes following a meeting between the Tenerife Island Council and the agricultural industry to discuss the potential declaration of a water emergency due to the severe drought affecting the region. Current assessments indicate that water reserves should be at around 72% capacity at this time of year, but they are currently only at 39%.
In alignment with these assessments, the Tenerife Island Council intends to formally declare a water emergency on Friday, March 1. The CC and PP parties presented a motion during the plenary session, requesting the Water Consortium to initiate the necessary procedures for declaring a potential water emergency and exploring additional measures to ensure adequate water supply to the population.
