The labour union Comisiones Obreras (CC.OO.) has recently highlighted the disruption in the Post Office service caused by inadequate staffing levels in Tenerife, particularly in the southern region of the island. The lack of recruitment to cover absences due to holidays, sick leave, and structural positions has led to significant chaos, resulting in frequent delays in parcel deliveries and letter distributions to residents.
This situation is said to be significantly impacting the efficiency of the public postal service, raising concerns amongst citizens relying on these services, especially those in rural areas. DIARIO DE AVISOS has also reported on these continuous delivery delays in the southern region for several months, echoing the concerns raised by CCOO.
CCOO highlights that there have been recurring months of chaotic operations, failing to ensure the timely distribution of traditional mail (letters), registered items (certificates and notifications), and an increasing volume of parcels. They stress that Correos must maintain the quality and regularity standards expected by customers.
The ongoing lack of recruitment in the Canary Islands is deemed to have adverse effects on citizens and the working conditions of employees. This is due to the increased risk of work-related accidents in post offices and offices, resulting from the additional workload of managing multiple transportation routes and the ensuing stress. Additionally, CCOO has lodged a formal complaint with the Labour Inspection authorities to investigate the most affected units.
CCOO deems it imperative for Correos to promptly implement measures to address this situation in the Canary Islands. They urge Correos to ensure adequate staffing levels in its offices and urban as well as rural delivery centres across the archipelago.
