The La Laguna City Council, in collaboration with the Autonomous Sports Organization (OAD), hosted the inaugural ‘Cultural Carnival Race’ on Saturday, drawing an impressive crowd of almost 300 attendees dressed in vibrant costumes. Participants gathered to enjoy a night of sports amidst a festive and family-friendly atmosphere.
Badel Albelo, the president of the Autonomous Sports Organization, expressed his delight at the event’s success in terms of citizen engagement, considering it was the first edition. He indicated that the race is likely to become a staple in the local calendar for years to come.
The event kicked off with the children’s category at 6:00 p.m., leading up to the adult race covering a distance of 1,350 meters. Participants showcased their original and creative costumes, demonstrating their passion for sports in a unique and unconventional way. Both races started and finished at Plaza del Cristo, the heart of the Laguna Cultural Carnival.
Albelo highlighted that this non-competitive and free event seamlessly combines physical activity, culture, and leisure in a celebratory setting. Many attendees donned costumes to explore the historic centre, basking in a festive ambiance filled with camaraderie and shared moments.
This event stood alongside other prominent sporting events in a month of February dedicated to sports. Looking ahead to March, the San Cristóbal de La Laguna Night Race (on March 2) and the Race for ALS (on March 16) are anticipated, with a significant number of participants already registered. These upcoming events are set to further promote and elevate the spirit of sportsmanship in the local community.
