The Lanzarote Basketball ClubPuerto del Carmen succumbed at home on Saturday at the Municipal de Tías against Balonmano Santa Cruz de Tenerife (27-29) in a match corresponding to the twenty-first round of the Women’s Silver Honor Division Group A league.
The match was closely fought from the start. In the initial minutes, nothing foreshadowed the final outcome (4-3, min. 10). However, Octavio Raúl Pérez’s players arrived at the Municipal de Tías well-prepared and fully aware of the match’s importance for the Tenerife squad. Gradually, the visiting team began to dominate, and memories of the first leg match (Tenerife won on their home turf with a significant 34-25 score) started creeping into the minds of the Tías players, allowing the visitors to reach halftime with a slight advantage (14-15).
The halftime break did not significantly alter the course of the game. The differences did not widen, but Juanmi Pérez’s team found themselves constrained by the Tenerife approach, finding it almost impossible to level the score despite their efforts. A case of wanting but not being able to. Nothing changed as the minutes passed, and the visitors secured the victory, displacing Puerto del Carmen from the top spot and causing the third defeat of the season for the aurinegras.
A familiar face in Lanzarote’s handball, Adina Guidoarca, was the top scorer for the Tenerife team with eight goals. In the ranks of Tías, the Paraguayans Delyne Leiva and Fernanda Insfrán each scored six goals for the home team.
With five rounds remaining and, for the first time in many weeks, there is a change at the top of the standings. With this defeat, Carballal takes the lead with 35 points. Following closely in second place is the Tías team with 33 points and one fewer game played. In third place, Gijón follows with 32 points, now very close to Tías. Tenerife is climbing towards the top after their victory in Lanzarote, with 28 points, in fourth place.
Puerto del Carmen returns to regular competition on Saturday, March 9, at 6:00 p.m. at the Municipal de Tías, hosting Oliveira & Faro Saeplast Cañiza, a team that recently defeated Porriño (33-24) and currently sits in tenth place with 14 points. The following week, they will play a rescheduled match. It will be held on Saturday, March 2, at the court of Inelsa Solar Asmubal Meaño, a team in twelfth place with 12 points.
