Fernando Clavijo, Canarian President, has branded the proliferation of offers on holiday rental platforms as “insane”, following the discovery by EL DÍA of camping tents set up on the rooftop of a residential building in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. “It’s absurd what can be found when searching on holiday rental platforms for options under 40 euros per day,” Clavijo criticized on Thursday during the laying of the first stone for a social housing development of 65 apartments in La Orotava.
The Canarian leader promised measures against these “absurdities”, which “cause a lot of harm” to a tourist destination like Canary Islands that “focuses on quality and excellence”. “We will not hide. The Ministry of Tourism is drafting a law to regulate this activity. Situations like this cannot continue to happen,” highlighted Clavijo. He believes that precisely behind these cases lies “the lack of regulation” at a national level. “There is an absence of regulation and a lack of resources for control, two problems we will try to solve,” the President of the Canary Islands made clear.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has taken decisive action after this newspaper revealed the fraudulent exploitation of these tents on the rooftop of the city center, which were advertised on a well-known international platform dedicated to holiday rentals. The person responsible has been fined 15,001 euros and ordered to remove the booths, which were not supposed to be on the rooftop.
