Recently, a user of the social media platform Instagram chose to share two different incidents in two different locations, both involving the same type of protagonist: individuals with reduced mobility riding their adapted scooters on the road as if it were a normal occurrence.
This situation has garnered so much attention that the user has decided to create a series of posts under a common heading: “Mario Kart in Tenerife,” a reference to the popular video game.
Both incidents involved reckless behaviour that put the lives of the individuals on the scooters and other drivers at risk. In the first video, a scooter designed for persons with reduced mobility is seen not only driving along an avenue in Los Cristianos but also using the left lane, which is designated for overtaking only.
The situation is further aggravated by the fact that, as evident in the footage, the vehicle is a rental.
In the second video, the situation appears to be even more precarious. Filmed by a motorcyclist on the main road in the south of the island, the footage captures an individual with reduced mobility travelling in the lane, posing a risk to other road users.
The danger is evident, as the motorcyclist not only does not anticipate this sudden obstacle in an area with poor visibility, but is also travelling at a much slower speed than the permitted limit.
