The housing situation in Tenerife continues to be a problem for those who face the daily search for a place to live. Excessive real estate demands with practically unaffordable conditions, the rise of vacation housing, and the placing on the market of authentic hovels for rent, add to the exorbitant price of rentals.
At the end of 2023, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the rent increased by 2.5% compared to December, establishing itself at 12.6 euros/m2, 0.6% compared to October and 21.5% compared to January 2023. And in the province of Las Palmas, it rose by 0.8% per month (13.3€/m2), 1.6% quarterly, and 9.4% annually.
This situation has brought despair to many people in Tenerife who cannot find an affordable rental. The latest case denounced on the X social network by journalist Víctor Brito reveals that he can only find 11 apartments in all of Tenerife for less than 600 euros, as shown on the Idealista website, the main website for searching for rental and sale apartments.

All the properties listed for less than this amount are studios or small one-bedroom apartments, suitable for couples or single people, but do not meet the housing needs of families with children or elderly. In other words, if it is already difficult to find a place for a single person or a family sharing a room (a couple, for example), the mission becomes even more complicated when it comes to finding a home for a family.
Taganana, the Only Solution

Among the eleven apartments currently available for rent in Tenerife for less than 600 euros, there is only one with more than one bedroom, a 65m2 house and three bedrooms in Taganana.
The ad states that it is necessary to have a car to access the property. It is located on a cobbled (not asphalted) street, narrow, with houses on both sides.
45 Minutes by Car from Santa Cruz and an Hour from La Laguna

The housing situation in Taganana, the only one available for less than 600 euros in Tenerife with more than one bedroom, is quite far from the two main population centers in the metropolitan area: Santa Cruz is a 45-minute drive and La Laguna is over an hour. That is, always assuming one has a vehicle. If the trip is to be made by public transport, the duration of the journey and the transfers are even longer. However, the bus stop is ‘only’ a ten-minute walk away.
