SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –
In an event held in the Aula Magna of the Central Building, Francisco Almeida Ossa took office on Tuesday, the 20th, as the president of the Social Council of the University of La Laguna. Significantly, this ceremony took place within the academic milieu for the first time, a fact highlighted by the academic institution’s rector, Francisco García, symbolizing a closer relationship with the university.
The gathering, organized by the Department of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, drew a substantial number of representatives from various segments of society and the academic sphere. For the rector, this demonstrated unequivocal support for the appointment, signifying the assumption of a significant responsibility to strengthen the university’s ties with society.
With extensive experience on the governing body, having served in several terms, Francisco Almeida has held public office positions and worked in the private sector as well. Consequently, the rector believes he possesses the ideal profile to lead the Social Council.
In assuming his new role, Almeida highlighted that his responsibilities encompass not only raising funds and resources for the university, but also fostering innovation within the academic institution and ensuring accountability. He emphasized that the university is an ideal space for equality, combating barriers to advancement, and upholding social responsibility.
Furthermore, he indicated that the Social Council will support the university’s ongoing review of degree programs, with the goal of aligning them with the socioeconomic context. He believes this body can effectively disseminate university knowledge to the wider society.
Migdalia Machín, the Minister of Universities, cited the renewal of the collegiate body as a testament to the ongoing commitment to the university. She expressed gratitude to the outgoing president, Dolores Pelayo, for her work and lauded the vision and leadership of the rectors and the university itself. According to her, the university not only prioritizes education and research, but it also fosters social innovation and is vital for the progress of the region and the development of future leaders.
