The La Laguna City Council asserts that shutting down Guamasa alone “will just relocate the issue elsewhere”

Following the announcement of the permanent closure of the Guamasa link with the TF5 by the Cabildo de Tenerife, the La Laguna City Council (governed by PSOE and CC) expressed its concern, stating that if this measure is not accompanied by other actions, it will essentially mean “transferring the problem from one place to another.”

The council emphasized that it is “the first party interested” in establishing effective solutions to mobility issues in North Tenerife and acknowledged the efforts of the Cabildo in this regard.

However, they iterated that the Provincial Traffic Headquarters’ report rightly asserts that closing the TF-5 “requires complementary actions on alternative routes” to be truly effective.

The council stressed the need for a comprehensive outlook rather than just relocating the problem from the highway to the Guamasa highway, calling for measures to be implemented to prevent the problem from affecting the entire Northeast Region residents.

To address this, they urged the Town Council to promptly arrange a technical meeting to collaborate on planned actions and to ensure timely communication with affected residents.

The La Laguna City Council emphasized their ongoing advocacy for a comprehensive approach to address the mobility issues in the North of the island, which includes major infrastructure projects such as the TF-5 variant, the burying of the highway passing through La Laguna, the La Gorgolana tunnel, and the pedestrian walkway of the Padre Anchieta roundabout, advocated by the previous island government, among other necessary measures to alleviate congestion on the highway network.
