The Urban Planning Management budget of La Laguna City Council includes a specific allocation of 60,000 euros for initiating a consultation with La Laguna residents. The goal is to gather and assess their suggestions for the future amendment of the Historic Center’s Special Protection Plan (PEP), and its alignment with the new regulatory framework, as stated by the Management. The City Council is open to considering specific modifications to articles of the PEP, which has been an essential instrument for safeguarding the historic center of La Laguna.
Regarding the consultation, the details of its execution are being finalized, and the method is yet to be fully determined. However, it is being actively developed to determine the approach as soon as possible.
The Councilor for Territorial Planning and director of the Urban Planning Management, Adolfo Cordobés, highlighted that “the Special Protection Plan has been an effective instrument in ensuring the present and future of the historic center. Nevertheless, we recognise that there is always room for improvement in these documents, and the affected citizens play a vital role in providing their inputs for us to consider in any renewal process.”
“We must progress towards the desired city, always hand in hand with the population of La Laguna,” emphasized the mayor.
Request for Amendment
The repeated request for the modification of the PEP, a document approved in 2005, has been made by various groups, especially the Association of Neighbors of the Historic Center. In recent municipal plenary sessions, they have displayed posters demanding the amendment, deeming the document outdated and in need of revision.
Additionally, it is important to note that the Urban Planning Management is also working on establishing the Historic City Office. This office will be dedicated to protecting the historical complex and listed buildings of the municipality, as well as other forms of heritage such as artistic, archaeological, ethnographic, bibliographic, documentary, linguistic, landscape, industrial, scientific, technical, or of any other cultural nature, regardless of ownership and legal regime.
