Mari Brito, the mayor of Candelaria, is demanding Urbaser to strictly adhere to waste collection and street cleaning due to the continuous non-compliance by the company. The mayor assures that “many areas of the municipality have been left without garbage collection” from last Saturday to Tuesday.
Mari Brito reports that the repeated non-compliance registered in this service by the company providing it has been communicated “on several occasions” to the responsible parties at Urbaser in Tenerife. The mayor explains that, “in the face of inoperability,” considering that they continue to be registered, yesterday she expressed her dissatisfaction to the company’s management in Madrid.
The mayor of Candelaria hopes for “an immediate response.” In this regard, she announces that, “if this is not the case, she will take whatever actions are necessary to reverse the situation.” Given that Urbaser will continue to provide waste collection and street cleaning services, “as long as the new contract is signed”, formalization that is paralyzed as a result of the presentation of two appeals to the Public Contracts Administrative Tribunal of the Government of the Canary Islands against the awarding of the service.
The Town Hall definitively awarded the waste collection and street cleaning and coastal cleaning to the company Valoriza Servicios Medioambientales SA on November 24th. The award price amounts to 21,569,292 euros (20,158,217 euros and 1,411,075 euros), with a period of seven years of validity.
Urbaser has been collecting garbage in Candelaria since it was awarded the service in 2001 for a period of 10 years. After its expiration, the new contract has had to be extended until now, causing significant political differences during this period, in which the demographic growth of the municipality has been exceptional.
