La Recova opens its doors to rock, pop, and other sounds with a concert series that aims to revive live music in this emblematic space of the city of Arrecife, on the island of Lanzarote. The former market of the island of Lanzarote, a historical and unique enclave, will host a series of three concerts starting from February 23 under the title of La Recova Rock, presenting six Canarian artists with different styles and sonic imprint. A lineup of six acts, three of them from Lanzarote, and others coming from Gran Canaria and Tenerife, marks the first venture of these concerts organized by the Council of Culture of the City of Arrecife and Malpaís Records.

The bands Antiplancton and iMtiMa will kick off the live music program at La Recova on February 23, at 8 p.m. The second of the dates is on March 15, also at 8 p.m., featuring Fajardo and Ajeeb. And a third and final live performance, at the same time, on April 19, will showcase Clavelitos and Dyatlov. Entry to the concerts is free and requires prior invitation collection from the following link: https://tickety.es/event/rock-la-recova

With a menu that offers, in broad strokes, stoner rock with hints of psychedelia; fun and roguish music that knows no boundaries; rock infused with electronica and programming; soul-wrenching songwriting; or a generous serving of electropunk and synthwave, La Recova begins its program on February 23 with the intention of continuing a musical offer that serves as a showcase for the promotion of Canarian artists, both from the island of Lanzarote and the rest of the Archipelago.

The Artists

Antiplancton is a rock band with electronic influences based in Canary Islands, formed by Carlos Castillo, vocals, guitar and synthesizers; Fabián Yánez, guitars, synthesizers and programming; Nolo Hernández, on bass; and Pier Blasi, on drums. Based in Tenerife, their style lies between indie and krautrock, with a solid rhythmic base that appeals to the primal and essential nature of the songs. Starting from electronic bases combined with acoustic drums, they add guitar energy and compelling synthesizers in varying doses. The melodies act as a counterpoint, elegantly hovering over the solid layers of rock and electronica. Songs such as Lenguas muertas, Todas las veces and En los estanques, among others, showcase the potential of Antiplancton. For their debut album Otros Cuerpos (2023), the group has the production of Raúl Pérez (La Mina) and the mixing of Manu Cabezalí (Havalina).

iMtiMa is a band from Lanzarote, founded by guitarist Jonay Armas and Sabrina Garri, the keyboardist of the band. Their sound palette is influenced by grunge and stoner rock with traces of psychedelia. Winners of several competitions including Honda Rock, Playa Honda, in September 2014, Teguise ShowCase, La Villa de Teguise, in April 2017, and Lala Core, Tenerife, in November 2019. In December 2016, the band reinvented themselves with new sounds and compositions, undergoing a change in lineup and format, with the group reduced to three members and Gastón joining as a new member, undoubtedly leaving his mark on the group’s style, adding more power and quality to their compositions.

Jonay continues as the guitarist and vocalist, while Sabri remains on the keyboards, this time adding synthesizers to their new set, undoubtedly bringing personality to the new iMtiMa sound. Meraki, their album released in 2017, recorded at Néptar Estudios (Lanzarote) and mixed and mastered at Estudios Guamasa (Tenerife), served as their introduction with nine tracks that staked their sonic territory.

Ajeeb is a power trio from Lanzarote formed in 2016. Its members are: Rafa Pacheco, on drums; Sara GDM, on bass; and Cucho Segura, on guitar and vocals. In late 2017, they made their debut at Aguere Cultural in Tenerife. Since then, they released their first work Toss and Turn in 2018 under the Lubjanka Records label and presented it across the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, the Peninsula, and abroad, performing at national and international festivals such as Grito Rock 2018 (Cape Verde) and Arrecife en Vivo (Lanzarote), as well as showcases like BIME Pro (Bilbao). They also participated in the first Spinda Sessions (Cádiz), organized by Spinda Records, and in the 12th anniversary of Nooirax Producciones at the Wurlitzer Ballroom (Madrid).

Additionally, they toured Germany, Switzerland, and Austria (2018), and the United Kingdom (2019) with the German group The Black Shoes. In 2019, the Tenerife label El Hombre Bala Records reissued Toss and Turn, including two unreleased tracks. It was released in early 2020. During the lockdown, the band composed their second full-length album, Refractions, recorded, mixed, and mastered by José A. López at La Caterva (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) between October 2021 and April 2022.

Fajardo: A Unique Musician From Fuerteventura

Fajardo is a fierce artist whose music transcends the boundaries of singer-songwriter. Born in Fuerteventura and now residing in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, since his first tour of the peninsula in 2009, his career has matured into something truly unique. His journey has seen the release of several singles and splits, an EP, and three albums, with the most recent one, Intuición, released in 2021. Fajardo has developed a distinct vocal style and control that defies comparison. His ability to embody his music and convey truth through his songs is unparalleled.

From raw emotion to delicate depth, Fajardo’s voice beautifully embodies his distinctive compositional style. Each piece is complemented by its counterpart, creating a harmonious flow. This thoughtful approach extends to his songwriting, with precise yet natural lyricism and structures that reveal and conceal as dictated by the narrative. His songs are as complex harmonically as they are accessible to the listener, a challenging feat. While restraint and precision may set the stage, delving into the content reveals a spectrum of emotions, crafting essential aesthetic forms.

Meet Clavelitos: The Energetic Band from Lanzarote

Clavelitos is a band from Lanzarote that has been active since May 2023, with Damián on guitar and vocals, Yosu on bass, and Josito on drums. Adriel on vocals and Marcos on synthesizers later joined the band. Each member brings years of musical experience from various formations and previous groups. Their musical style falls under the broad term of alternative rock, encompassing elements of pop, punk, and experimental or psychedelic influences. In essence, their music offers spirited and tuneful melodies.

Dyatlov: Revolutionary Electronica from Tenerife

Dyatlov is a project that originated in the municipality of La Laguna in early 2021. Carlos and Deborah form this electronic duo, crafting lyrics that reflect global unease, employing cold and abrasive electronic sounds with a nod to the revolutionary poet Vladímir Mayakovski, in an attempt to propagate his ideas. The atmospheres they create resonate with the current state of affairs. While the lyrics convey a sense of global discomfort, the soundscapes offer a glimmer of hope, if not in regeneration, at least in our ability to script our own epitaph. Their sounds span across various genres including electropunk, drone, ambient, industrial, synthwave, and classic electronica, all underpinned by a combative lyrical style.

Don’t Miss Dyatlov’s Live Performance!

The name Dyatlov refers to the controversial Dyatlov Pass incident in Russia. They have released two albums under the Los 80 Pasan Factura label in CD/k7/vinyl format. Their live shows are where their rage and message truly come to life, enhanced by visuals and performances. They have graced festivals and venues such as MantaFest, Festivalito Sonora, Fiesta presentación Arrecife en Vivo, Festival Rock and Books, PadarteRock, Aguere Cultural, and many more, sharing the stage with artists like Belako, Mel Omana, Bejo, and Las Ratas among others. Their discography includes the albums Invitados en número perturbador (2021) and Tenía la rara virtud de no existir por completo (2023).
