The El Mojón Partial Plan Compensation Board, headed by Miguel Villarroya, gave the go-ahead yesterday to the urban development agreement with the Arona City Council, following the latter’s endorsement at the municipal plenary session.
Meeting the stipulations set by the City Council, the Compensation Board will disburse approximately 700,000 euros to fulfil the clauses of this urban planning agreement, with a further similar amount to follow. This will bring the total to nearly one and a half million euros to cover regular expenses and additional security costs.
During the meeting, the budget was approved to comply with the required works of the urban planning agreement, which involve the 50 proprietors of the 70 plots in El Mojón, excluding the public land designated for cultural, recreational, educational, and sports facilities by the Arona City Council.
Following the City Council’s approval of the agreement last Tuesday, the Compensation Board had a 15-day window to ratify it. With this step completed, all that remains is the signing between both parties to make it effective. Subsequently, construction work will commence, followed by the municipal acceptance of the works and, within a year, the granting of licenses for the construction of at least three four-star hotels.
Meeting the legal obligation to transfer a percentage of land for public use, the agreement specifies the conditions of acceptance by the City Council, including two municipal parks (pending environmental assessment), recreational and sports areas, a treatment plant, and a plot earmarked for a cultural facility. The City Council has already announced plans to erect the Arona Arena, a venue for trade fairs, conferences, and performances.
The total transfer area is estimated to exceed 150,000 square meters, out of the nearly million available in the El Mojón Partial Plan, spanning from the Hospital del Sur to Los Cristianos and dating back nearly 30 years.
Various hotel chains such as Spring, Marylanza, and HG have already expressed interest in establishing new accommodations for a “medium-high” tourist clientele. Additionally, prominent multinational retailers like Lidl have shown intent to set up operations in the area.
