Dedicated to Magistral Don Heraclio, Heraclio Sánchez Street in La Laguna starts at Herradores and culminates at the central building of the University, covering a distance of 750 meters. As it crosses Barcelona Street, aligned with the Cha Marta ravine, it also intersects with Cathedral Street, the old Taoro Road, and Doctor Zamenhof Street, named after the creator of Esperanto.
At house number 2 on the right side, Lagunero businessman Don Andrés Acuña Dorta, formerly president of Orfeón la Paz, and a councilor of the City Council, established a hardware store and a wood sales outlet. Nearby, the renowned Ramos Pension was a popular choice among teachers and students due to its proximity to the university facilities.
On the left side, a modern building housed a furniture exhibition and sales store named Caceres Furniture, adjacent to a movie theater, Victoria Park. This theatre, successor to the one inaugurated in Plaza del Adelantado in 1928, ceased its operations in 1984, marking the end of film screenings in the heart of La Laguna.
Former Football Field of the De La Salle Brothers
The large plot on this street, formerly known as the Brothers football field owned by the La Salle Religious Order, was sold for the construction of a residential complex and a shopping centre in the early 1980s, marking the beginning of the leisure area known as “Heraclio in the Lagunera scene”, predominantly frequented by university students.
On the right side, a complex of residential and commercial spaces known as Ruben Cabrera
On the left side, at the corner of Doctor Zamenhof Street, the Maype lithography (Manolo y Pepe) showcased modern, color printing machinery, producing various posters and electoral programs for political parties in La Laguna. The vicinity also saw the businesses of Don Mateo Perera’s reprography, the well-known bars Benjamin and Tropical, and for over 51 years, the esteemed Lemus Bookstore, creating a distinct university atmosphere owing to its proximity to different faculties.
The Former La Laguna Normal School, Current Faculty of Education
For the past 27 years, the Faculty of Education of the University of La Laguna has been situated at the corner of this street. The faculty is responsible for the administrative management, planning, organization, and supervision of university education to confer academic titles in Teacher, Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, and Pedagogy.
The classes are conducted in the old building of the School of Teaching, which is a continuation of the former Normal Elementary School of Teachers, established in 1849. The building, designed by architect Mr. Francisco Navarro Borrás, initially housed two attached primary education groups for student practice, along with sports facilities.
The “Student Javier Fernández Quesada” Park (Formerly the Dragos)
Adjacent to the Faculty of Education building stands the “Dragon Park”, which was inaugurated on September 8, 1992, during Mr. José Segura Clavell’s tenure as mayor of La Laguna. The park, featuring predominantly dragon trees and Canarian palm trees, also includes a pavilion for traditional Canarian musical performances and has recently dedicated a specific area for dog use. In 2008, the venue was renamed to honour the young student Javier Fernández Quesada, who tragically passed away during a student protest in 1977.
