The Water Monitoring Commission has reported that the Güímar City Council, on the recommendation of the UTE Aqualia-FCC, the company set to manage the service for the next 25 years, plans to increase water rates by 19.1%. The new rates will have three consumption sections with varying prices: less than 10 cubic meters, more than 30, and more than 60. The billing will be done in bimonthly periods. This increase occurs after years without any price adjustments, and is attributed to the need to update market prices and the CPI.
This substantial proposed increase will be subject to review by the information commission before being included in the agenda for the municipal plenary session by the end of the month. This is when Councilor Nayra Caraballero of Unidas Sí Podemos will determine her stance on the matter. Caraballero had previously expressed her intention to “municipalize” all the services of the City Council as part of the pact with the Canarian Coalition and the Socialist Party, which resulted in Mayor Gustavo Pérez assuming office.
Councilor Francisco Hernández Armas has stated that the Popular Party, with nine councilors, will oppose the proposed increase.
Also in Candelaria
Additionally, an increase in water charges has been announced in Candelaria, also managed by Aqualia, after seven years of frozen prices. The adjustment comes in response to a court ruling regarding the failure to raise prices when necessary under the leadership of Mayor Gumersindo García. While the percentage increase in Candelaria is still under consideration, it is unlikely to be as high as in Güímar.
