600 constables to oversee Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival

The national constabulary will establish a special arrangement to ensure safety at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival consisting of 600 officers, intervention teams, prevention and reaction units, undercover officers, canine handlers, and the Canary Islands Superior Headquarters’ helicopter.

In a statement released on Friday, the national constabulary stated that its aim is to celebrate the festivities without major incidents and will collaborate with other security forces such as the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Local Police and the Autonomous Police.

The arrangement will be divided into three distinct areas of work, and in terms of public safety, the primary objective is to prevent the commission of crimes, public order disturbances, and to fulfil the objectives established by the Anti-Terrorism Prevention and Protection Plan, ensuring the smooth running of the carnival events.

Plainclothes national constables will operate in the most contentious areas with large crowds to provide an immediate response if necessary.

Furthermore, the services of the National Constabulary’s Complaints and Citizen Services Offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be reinforced to handle possible incidents.

Transport teams will also be available to control the maritime routes between the two Canary Islands capitals.

Additionally, the national constabulary will have drone and anti-drone equipment to ensure security in the Tenerife capital’s skies.

The constabulary has also issued a series of safety recommendations for carnival participants, such as bringing essential items to events, avoiding carrying valuable objects, keeping bags and backpacks closed and towards the front, and not carrying potentially dangerous objects or materials.

It also emphasizes that drug consumption in public areas is punishable and drug trafficking is a criminal offence.

For crowded places and when accompanied by children, the national constabulary advises displaying the adult’s phone number visibly, parking away from crowded areas, and refraining from withdrawing money in those locations.

The national security body also advises staying away from altercations or violent acts and notifying the on-duty police officers or by calling 091.
