The Tenerife Island Council has announced an investment of 243,694 euros this year for the improvement of the facilities at the animal shelter in Ravelo. These facilities in El Sauzal are owned by the island and managed by the Association for the Defense and Protection of Animals in Canary Islands (Adepac).
The works planned for this year will include providing the Ravelo animal shelter with a purification system, constructing a clinic space to attend to the dogs in the shelter, as well as creating a parking area. Additionally, there will be adaptation of a living area and necessary work to equip the shelter with a green energy system through the installation of solar panels, as stated by the Council in a press release.
The 240,000 euros allocated by the island authority for the improvement of these facilities this year are part of a multi-year investment totaling 843,265 euros. These facilities were already subject to maintenance and improvement works in 2023, amounting to 35,000 euros.
Better to adopt

The councilors responsible for Animal Welfare at the island authority, Manuel Fernández and Valentín González, visited the shelter earlier this week. Their presence in Ravelo allowed them to confirm, through Fernández and González, “the commitment of the Tenerife Island Council to animal welfare.” Both agreed to ensure that “during this term, we will promote a work agenda focused on combating animal abandonment and supporting adoption policies.”
In this context, Manuel Fernández and Valentín González emphasized the importance of “the role of animal shelters”, as they are the places where attention is first provided to abandoned animals. With this in mind, the Animal Welfare councilors also stressed that “the primary goal should always be the adoption of animals.” To achieve this, the island government is implementing awareness campaigns.
