SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 7th February (EUROPA PRESS) –
On Wednesday, the Governing Council of the Tenerife Council approved the ‘Activa Vivienda 2024’ program with a budget of five million euros, which has the potential to be increased by another five million, for the acquisition of housing or land across the 31 municipalities on the island.
The president of the Tenerife Council, Rosa Dávila, and the Minister of Social Action, Águeda Fumero, presented the details of the plan at a press conference, highlighting that the initiative will be carried out in collaboration with the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Icavi) with a maximum of one million euros per recipient.
Dávila emphasized that it is the first time the Tenerife Council has intervened in the housing market, recognizing the access to housing as one of the main challenges in society.
The program is scheduled to be implemented until December 31, 2025, and the properties will be utilized for social rental purposes for a period of 15 years, with the management being the responsibility of Icavi or, in some cases, the local councils themselves.
Priority will be given to the acquisition of already completed housing, and the purchases can be made from both private developers and banking entities.
TRAM STRIKE
In reference to the planned strike on the Tenerife tram for the forthcoming Friday, the president mentioned that the Minister of Mobility, Eulalia García, is currently engaged in negotiations with the unions to try to resolve the dispute.
The president acknowledged that efforts are being made by the corporation to identify a “secure alternative” for silica dust, a substance workers have raised concerns about due to its carcinogenic properties. However, she clarified that this braking system is employed in almost all transport safety systems around the world and stressed the objective of ensuring that any change made is “safe” for workers and users, considering the slopes on the route.
