In San Juan de la Rambla, Tenerife, a dramatic rescue took place as personnel from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) of the Government of the Canary Islands, flying a helicopter, saved a woman who was swept away by a storm surge and a man who courageously leaped into the water to assist her.
The incident occurred around 11:11 a.m. in Charco de la Laja, when the 50-year-old woman fell into the sea and a 53-year-old man attempted to come to her aid.
Onlookers at the scene threw two life preservers from the Beach Rescue Service of the San Juan de la Rambla City Council into the water to help keep both individuals afloat.
Initially, the woman showed symptoms of drowning and moderate hypothermia, while the man displayed symptoms of mild hypothermia but fortunately didn’t face any complications.
Both individuals were airlifted to Hospital del Norte after the GES helicopter safely transported them to the La Guancha helisurface.
