Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) cautions that the south of Tenerife “will be overwhelmed” by the development of the “new city” of El Mojón, in Arona, an area spanning nearly one million square meters allocated for hotel, residential, commercial, educational, sports, and teaching facilities.
According to an NC-BC councilor in Arona, Nauzet Fariña, the approval of the urban development agreement will unblock the partial plan of El Mojón after four decades, leading to dire consequences such as potential traffic problems, exacerbating the existing congestion affecting Los Cristianos and the TF-1.
Additionally, he criticizes the lack of proposals from the municipal government to address housing issues through the promotion of public housing in this plan, especially when it is nearly unfeasible for local residents to afford housing in the south of the island.
The councilor also cites “serious warnings” from technicians regarding the technical, legal, and economic viability of this agreement.
The plan, approved in a recent plenary session of the Arona City Council with votes in favor from PP, CC, and Más por Arona, and PSOE, and abstention from Vox, faced criticism from the NC-BC, which voted against it.
The approved agreement stipulates that the council will assume ownership of 332,904 square meters of the total 908,306 square meters of land, which will be transferred for public use without charge.
