SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 5th February (EUROPA PRESS) –
Martina Luis Domínguez, a student at the Camino Largo Early Childhood and Primary Education Center (CEIP), in La Laguna (Tenerife), will represent the Canary Islands in the final of the national competition ‘The Young Champions of Reading’, to be held on 7th June at the Madrid Book Fair.
This initiative, inspired by successful programmes in France and Germany, is being implemented for the first time in the Canary Islands in the academic year 2023/2024, specifically at two schools in Tenerife: CEIP Aguere and Camino Largo.
Despite an estimated 4,500 children participating in the competition nationwide, Martina was selected from a pool of 100 students by a jury consisting of seven professionals from the literary and cultural sectors.
In the grand final in Madrid, Martina Luis Domínguez will have three minutes to recite a chosen text aloud, with the author joining her on stage, and a panel comprising her peers and professionals from the literary, cultural, and educational domains will determine the winners.
‘The Young Champions of Reading’ initiative offers fourth grade students the opportunity to undertake the challenge of reading a selected text aloud, as if it were an adventure, and share it with their fellow classmates. Throughout the school year, they engage in various activities proposed in different educational materials, culminating in the final event in June.
This project fosters student involvement, encourages self-discovery, and promotes confidence-building. Furthermore, it encourages peer reading, recommendations of literature and authors, socialisation, and the acquisition of skills such as public speaking, all of which contribute to personal growth and development.
Ultimately, the initiative encourages the autonomy of the students by allowing them to freely select the texts they wish to read aloud, thereby shaping their individual preferences, enhancing reading comprehension, language mastery, fluency in oral expression, and active listening skills.
