SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The general secretary of the PSOE Canary Islands and minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, has expressed his readiness to run for reelection as president of the Canary Islands if the party members are in favor: “We will seek to return to the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands. Time will determine the necessity for it to happen.
This announcement came during the PSOE Canary Islands Regional Committee meeting held this Saturday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The meeting unanimously approved the performance of the Regional Executive Commission led by Ángel Víctor Torres, and also gave unanimous support to the proposal to appoint Jerónimo Saavedra as Honorary President of the party. The session began with a minute of silence in tribute to Lorenzo Olarte.
In his address to the party’s highest body, the secretary general and minister, paid tribute to the two former presidents of the Canary Islands who recently passed away and reflected on the party’s commitment to continuing their legacy. Torres also reviewed the party’s activities in the past year, highlighting the positive election results and emphasizing the party’s unwavering dedication to progressive, egalitarian, and socially just policies.
“Ours is not a party that solely opposes, even though it fulfills that role. It is a party that constantly aspires to govern. Because when we are in power, we do so with the wellbeing of those who are struggling in mind. We act as a shield against the exploitation of those who seek to monopolize economic, social, and communicative influence, which belongs to the minority,” he emphasized.
“When we are in office, we implement egalitarianism, social justice, territorial economic redistribution, interregional solidarity, and recognize the distinct characteristics of different regions, understanding that a region like La Gomera is not the same as Fuerteventura, just as Catalonia is different from the Canary Islands. Only the Socialist Party comprehends this when it comes to governance,” stated the party leader.
Torres also stressed the need to “heighten awareness against those who thrive on discord and tension, especially from those who, disguised as democrats, hold unilateral, totalitarian, and unidirectional ideologies.”
A “DISAPPOINTING” GOVERNMENT.
In addition, he criticized the “disappointing” performance of the current government of the Canary Islands, accusing its major partners, the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party, of not honoring their commitments made during the campaign. He claimed that the interests of these parties do not align with those of the citizens of the Canary Islands.
The general secretary and minister assured that the PSOE Canary Islands “will persist in standing up” to those who attempt to subjugate the majority of society. He added, “As time progresses, considering the years remaining for the present Canary Islands government, the necessity for the Socialist Party to regain control of the Government of the Canary Islands will become apparent.”
“Our strength lies in our party members, who guide us and remind us of the realities on the ground, to whom we are indebted because they represent the majority of our society. The majority of our party members reflect the struggles faced by people working hard every day to make ends meet and support their families. Therefore, we will not let them down,” he concluded.
RESOLUTIONS APPROVED
In addition to the proposal to appoint Jerónimo Saavedra as the new Honorary President of the party, the Regional Committee endorsed six other resolutions. One of them expressed “support and appreciation” for the Government of Pedro Sánchez “for their commitment to dialogue and consensus in defense of the majority of our society.”
Through the same resolution, the PSOE of the Canary Islands pledged “to vigorously work towards the upcoming European elections to counter the proliferation of hateful, populist, climate denialist, misogynistic, and inegalitarian policies of the right, aligned with the far-right.”
The remaining resolutions were related to housing policies, urging the current government of CC and PP to continue the work initiated in the last term under the Pact of Flowers; the need to implement measures at the regional level to regulate minors’ access to pornography; the protection of the Canary Islands Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, as well as the effective execution of social welfare policies to bolster support services in the Canary Islands, progress in dependency care, and improving poverty statistics. Additionally, at the behest of Socialist Youth, a proposal promoting more initiatives targeted at young people was also endorsed.
