With the exception of Vox, all factions within the Parliament of the Canary Islands have backed the Canary Islands’ government’s proposal to advocate before the Cortes Generales for the establishment of a Royal Decree Law mandating the reassignment of migrant minors to other autonomous communities, as also agreed upon by the Canarian Government and the Ministry of Youth and Children.
Following the session, Minister of Social Welfare, Candelaria Delgado, emphasized the “conciliatory” approach of all the groups and the “broad consensus”, from which Vox has distanced itself, cautioning that the compulsory redistribution of minors will benefit “criminal organizations” and the “trafficking” of children.
The counselor has advocated for the royal decree law due to its “much shorter” procedural route, noting that the Canary Islands are already responsible for approximately 5,500 unaccompanied minors under guardianship, pending the resolution of recent boat arrivals.
