Many residents of Tenerife are rushing to purchase the outfit they will wear at the Carnival in the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the most highly anticipated weeks for enthusiasts of the great chicharrera festival that begins next Friday, February 9, with the Announcement Parade.
Establishments like the iconic Carolan, which has four locations on the island and another in La Palma, are already experiencing a surge in demand for Carnival costumes in the capital of Tenerife. Daniel Borges, the person in charge of the business, tells DIARIO DE AVISOS that “we have been quite busy since last week, and we expect more people to come in the coming days.”
Seeking fabrics, finding accessories, or directly purchasing what we believe could make us stand out and be unique is crucial. However, there is always one costume that stands out from the rest in each edition.
“The barbie outfit is already in short supply,” confirms Borges at the other end of the phone. This comes as no surprise given the success of the movie released last July, which has become Warner’s highest-grossing film. This Carnival attire is closely followed by more traditional ones, such as those from Egypt, Rome, the hippie era, pirates, and the 80s.

Carnival in the streets, from February 9 to 18
The Announcement Parade will commence the festivities in the streets of Santa Cruz, which will conclude on February 18 with the performance of the Nifú Nifá-Fregolinos in the Plaza del Príncipe (11:00 am) and the End of the Festival (at 6:00 p.m.). The Burial of the Sardine will take place on the 14th, and the highly anticipated daytime carnival on the 17th.
