The complementary service in public transport both in coaches and in tram, is now automatically renewed for subscribers in various categories such as Canarian residents, seniors, young individuals, and people with disabilities by simply making ten trips within a three-month period. Previously, the requirement was the same but on a monthly basis. This measure has been officially approved by the Island Government Council. The access limit for free travel has been made more flexible to facilitate it for users who do not achieve the minimum of ten trips in a particular month. This new alternative allows 30 trips in the last quarter (90 days) irrespective of their distribution. Moreover, the Council has also given approval for modifying the conditions to access transportation passes. The main modification is that foreign citizens without a residence card (TIE) can apply for them by presenting their passport and evidence of registration, just like in other islands.
Tram Experience
During the Council deliberations regarding the strike announced by tram workers on Friday, February 9th, the day of the Carnival Parade, the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, expressed the government’s aim to “reach an agreement as soon as possible,” in response to the statements made by the Metrotenerife Business Committee, indicating a lack of willingness to engage in dialog by removing mediators who had helped resolve the previous conflict, concluded on June 26 last year. Dávila stressed that “a well-functioning collective transportation system and the well-being of the workers are crucial,” and emphasized the need to allow those engaged in the negotiations within the company to carry out their work. According to CCOO, the majority union organizing the strike, the call for strike is due to “non-compliance” in “a wide range of areas,” including safety and health at work, the collective agreement, and human resources.
Technological Advancement
The Council authorized the allocation of 1.5 million euros for enhancing the Island Telecommunications Ring. The island Council sanctioned the awarding of the works to the joint venture comprising Domaser Canaria SLU and APFutura Telecom SL. Rosa Dávila highlighted that the network enables the introduction of fiber optics to all 31 municipalities to improve telecommunications in their administrations and public infrastructures, as well as reinforcing the systems and communications of public sector points of interest, and enhancing connection speed and security. “This will establish us as one of the most well-connected regions with the highest capability to provide telecommunications coverage, representing a significant leap in quality,” asserted the president, underscoring the commitment to completing the entire “Ring by 2026 to ensure high-quality fiber optics throughout the entire Island.”
