An alliance has been formed between Alternativa Icodense and the Socialist Party to govern in Icod de los Vinos. According to the socialists in a statement, the aim is to revitalize the municipality concerning road infrastructure, the San Marcos beach project, the Cueva del Viento visitor center, social services, tourism promotion, sports, and education among other areas.
The agreement was unveiled at a press conference on Tuesday by Javier Sierra Jorge, the general secretary of Alternativa Icodense and mayor, Pedro Martín, the general secretary of the PSOE of Tenerife, and councilors Mónica Hernández (first deputy mayor and AI’s organization secretary), and Soledad Palenzuela and Gerardo Rizo, from the Socialist Party.
Soledad Palenzuela will handle Seniors, Equality, Women, LGTBIQ+ issues, and serve as the fifth term of mayor, while Gerardo Rizo will oversee Tourism and Icodtesa, and also hold the position of the eighth deputy mayor. However, he will not be full-time or receive remuneration.
Javier Sierra highlighted the harmonious relationship between both parties in the initial months of the term and emphasized that the agreement is “the outcome of dialogue and a robust project after years of stagnation and unmindful management of Icod.”
Pedro Martín emphasized the presence of “a shared vision. “We did not aim to form a specific number of councilors for the sake of it,” he said, “instead, we initiated with a project, hence our delayed involvement in the government.” “This is a gradual project,” he stressed, “envisaging a progressive North, encompassing numerous common goals, with which we aspire to pull the municipality out of the recent years’ stagnation and restore its former eminence.”
Gerardo Rizo added that the agreement document mirrors the “merging of both electoral programs with vital focal points, such as regional connections, road improvements, tackling high levels of unemployment, predominantly among the youth, the San Marcos beach project, and efforts to enhance the visitor center of the Cueva del Viento.”
