With a length of 270 meters, a width of 54 meters, 149,582 gross tons, and 241,064 deadweight tons, these are the colossal dimensions of the GTA FPSO, the vessel that has made its arrival at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with 144 crew members and over 500 professionals on board.
Set to undergo maintenance work on the Island for an estimated period of three to four months, the GTA FPSO will then resume its journey.
FPSO stands for Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading unit. In this particular case, the vessel, flagged in Panama, is a newly constructed ship which was built on behalf of BP plc, with an investment of three and a half years leading to its delivery in January 2023 at the Nantong shipyard (China).
Bermúdez affirms that “the port community of Santa Cruz, with its dedication and expertise, has accomplished a feat that other major ports in the world, such as Durban in South Africa, failed to achieve.” He emphasizes that “we now have in the port capital a production, storage, and unloading vessel that displaces almost 150 thousand gross registered tons and stretches 270 meters in length, and it is expected to be at the port for three to four months for its commissioning before departing for the West African coast.”
The mayor is confident that “the vessel’s presence in the port of Santa Cruz, along with the accommodation of its crew and the accompanying professionals, will generate significant economic activity and consumer traffic in various businesses within the city.” He further adds that “this will have a notable impact on job creation opportunities in the municipality, in addition to the expected hiring of more personnel by the company responsible for its commissioning work, Tenerife Shipyards, where all technical operations will be conducted.”
