The Socialist faction in the Cabildo of Tenerife has formally requested President Rosa Dávila to suspend the proposed extension of Line 2 of the tram to Muñeco de Nieve along Los Majuelos Avenue in the island’s capital. The party also emphasized the importance of consulting the residents, who have expressed concerns about potential damage and disruption.
This appeal comes in response to the upcoming plenary session where the Canarian Coalition, the Popular Party, and Vox plan to introduce a motion for the extension without offering clarity on the route and disregarding the substantial representation of local inhabitants.
PSOE highlights that the neighborhood representation of the affected area has conveyed its opposition to the expansion passing through Los Majuelos Avenue, particularly emphasizing its significance as “the sole recreational space in the area.”
The party cites the rejection of the project by Domingo Chávez Perdomo, the representative of the La Unión de La Gallega Neighborhood Association, who described the proposed extension as a prelude to further development along Los Majuelos Avenue.
According to the socialist group, this unplanned project, lacking citizen consultation, would be devastating for what they consider to be “the primary communal and green space for social gatherings and revitalization” in the southwest district of Tenerife’s capital.
Chávez asserts the desire for the route to adhere to its original plan, along Hespérides Avenue, and to preserve the area as the pivotal meeting point for residents, merchants, seniors, children, and athletes.
In response to Dávila’s claim that 95% of citizens support the proposed route, Chávez condemns the consultation as “manipulative and misleading”, emphasizing that the survey conducted was confusing and did not specifically address Los Majuelos.
Chávez adds, “The truth is that we have conducted surveys,” noting that they have garnered over 8,000 signatures against this route.
Emphasizing the community’s sentiment, Patricia Hernández, the general secretary of the PSOE in Santa Cruz, stresses that the residents want Los Majuelos Avenue to be improved, not destroyed.
