“We are not going to allow some people to disturb the tranquility of a hard-working and serious town,” emphasizes the mayor of La Victoria de Acentejo, Juan Antonio García Abreu.
The president makes this statement two days after giving the order to begin the tender for surveillance cameras that will be installed on public roads after the significant wave of robberies that the municipality has recorded in recent weeks, despite being the one with the lowest incidence. crime in the region, according to the data transferred by the Civil Guard.

“They are small thefts and without physical damage to people, but they intimidate and harm those who suffer it and, above all, if it is a small business. That is why this measure will allow for greater control and security in the town,” says García Abreu.

It states that in the last week there have been three specific events that have affected a private home and two commercial establishments. “In the end, businessmen dedicate many hours to running their business and we want to provide surveillance and provide some security to the neighbors with these cameras, which will allow them to clearly check the entrances and exits to the municipality,” he insists.

The objective is for them to be located at different points in the town, the upper and lower parts of La Victoria de Acentejo. It is also proposed to place them in public spaces to reduce acts of vandalism, although this last option must be studied so as not to violate people’s privacy. “There are other municipalities that have them installed and we believe that they would also serve to reduce possible vandalism,” he says.

In this sense, it shows its concern about the cost of erasing graffiti in some public spaces, such as the one that recently appeared at the IES La Victoria, or the destruction of furniture, and, therefore, knowing who has committed these acts. vandalism will allow the appropriate party to be held accountable. Also, control irregular dumping of scrap metal. “We have recently inaugurated the El Pinar playground, in which more than 420,000 euros were invested and we are worried that it will be easily destroyed,” says the councilor.

“The fact that this year’s budget has been approved has made it possible for me to accelerate this matter to try to deter this problem and in a matter of weeks it will be published on the platform so that it can be put out to tender,” adds the president.

Exact number

The exact number of cameras that will be installed is not yet known, but the mayor estimates that there will be a dozen. The bidding documents have already been prepared and the local police have been commissioned to prepare a report to calculate how many would be needed. “I have stopped tenders to give priority to this issue to see if potential criminals can be deterred and that the full weight of the law falls on those who carry out acts that are outside of it,” he says.

Finally, the mayor communicates that the local Police were “very satisfied” when the installation of these devices was proposed. He also recognized that it is a measure that should have been taken much earlier and is convinced that this action will help reduce the crime rate.
