This is due to the anticyclone that will occupy a large portion of the troposphere. With this, it is expected that several areas of Spain will have record values in certain meteorological variables, related to temperature at 850 hPa and geopotential at 500 hPa. Thus, stable weather is expected with clear skies and high temperatures that could break records for the month of January.
“The percentile maps show record values over Spain compared to other parts of the world, both in intensity, extension and duration of the two variables planned and shown,” argued Martín, who added that “based on these maps, at about 5,500 meters of altitude (500 hPa) the temperatures these days will be in the highest part of the available series, and could reach records in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Algeria”.
The same can happen with temperatures at about 1,500 meters (850 hPa). The values predicted for January 25, and other days and times, may take maximum values of the series in the analyzed area.
“There is no doubt that in other places on Earth temperatures at 1,500 meters may be higher but, when compared with their modern historical series, the highest values are found over large areas of Spain,” according to the Meteored spokesperson.
With this configuration, daytime surface temperatures will be spring-like and from this Wednesday they will reach above 20 ºC in many areas of Spain. Temperatures can also exceed 25ºC in areas of the south and southeast of the peninsula, as well as in the Canary Islands.
At night, with clear skies, thermal values will drop and the temperature contrasts between day and night will be very high in the interior areas of the peninsula. In this way, some maximum temperature values could be exceeded in the interior of the peninsula, especially in the Northern Plateau, Meteored warns.
