Workers at the Playa de las Américas Casino, dependent on the Tenerife Cabildo, call a strike

The workers of the Playa de Las Américas Casino, owned by the Cabildo of Tenerife, have announced that they will go on strike between January 26 and February 9, due to the refusal of the island corporation to negotiate the collective agreement, as reported UGT Canarias.

The Playa de Las Américas Casino has operating income of eight million euros and the cost of the workforce is two million, but the Cabildo “refuses to recognize the increase in the CPI in payrolls,” criticizes the union.

The impact of this strike on the Casino’s income will be 600,000 euros, according to the calculations of the workers, who affirm that the casinos’ profits allow the Cabildo to clean up its accounts.

“The negotiation table has been stopped since April of last year” and the response to the workers’ attempts to resume dialogue has been silence, according to UGT, which does not rule out that the protests may become radicalized.
