The budget of the La Laguna City Council in terms of housing experiences a growth of 295% in 2024 compared to 2023, going from 1,834,299 to 7,262,212 euros. This is the largest percentage increase in the entire municipal budget document, as highlighted by the local Council.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, assessed that these data “express the firm will of the Government group to continue advancing in the creation of a municipal public housing stock, to guarantee housing solutions especially for people in vulnerable situations.”
In the presentation of the budget, the mayor recalled that “our intention is to reach the figure of 300 social homes in the municipality in the next three years, and these budgets represent a firm step in this direction.”
“We are aware that the municipality is no stranger to the housing crisis that our country is going through and the difficulties that many La Laguna families have to face to access the purchase or rental,” commented, for his part, the councilor of Housing and director of the Urban Planning Management, Adolfo Cordobés, who assured that “we are working hand in hand with other administrations to facilitate the population’s access to the housing market.”
In this sense, he recalled the motion approved in the last plenary session so that the future General Planning Plan of the municipality “establishes mechanisms, within its powers, to limit vacation rentals as a way to moderate the price of rentals.”
As detailed by the local Council, the main investments contemplated in the 2024 budget are destined precisely to the construction of 151 new public housing homes, thanks to an agreement signed by the City Council with the Government of Spain, the Government of the Canary Islands and the Society Municipal Housing and Services of La Laguna (Muvisa), and which will involve a total investment of 24 million euros.
The City Council will allocate 17.09 million euros in three annual installments to this end. In this year, an investment of 1,491,686 euros is contemplated, to which another 4 million are added from the La Laguna Urban Planning Management. These 151 new homes are distributed between the Los Barriales area, in Taco, where the construction of 71 homes is planned; Tejina, with another 44 units; and El Centurión, in the San Honorato neighborhood, with 36 more.
Rehabilitation
Likewise, progress continues in the rehabilitation works of the El Centurión Urban Regeneration and Renewal Area, which will have 458,272 euros for the rehabilitation of the old homes, in addition to 18,177 euros for studies and technical works.
Also, the program to improve the Programmed Rehabilitation Residential Environment (ERRP) of El Cardonal will have an allocation of 1,329,524 euros in this year, to which 48,345 euros will be added in studies and technical works.
Likewise, the budget has an item of 3,519,537 euros as a municipal contribution planned within the first phase of the replacement process of the Las Chumberas urbanization, with the two buildings of 79 and 118 homes that are being built.
These actions in the Housing area are reinforced directly by the Social Welfare area, directed by María Cruz, whose budget for 2024 has an item of 677,269 euros for extraordinary rental aid, which will serve more than 250 families of the municipality, and 610,000 euros for low-intensity accommodation resources.
