SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, January 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

This Tuesday, the Cabildo of Tenerife presented the ‘Tenerife Sustainable Fashion’ brand to advance the strengthening of the recycling, fashion and textile industry.

The event was attended by the president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, the counselor of Natural Environment, Sustainability and Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez; the Minister of Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, and the insular director of Waste, Alejandro Molowny.

Rosa Dávila explained that Tenerife Sustainable Fashion “is a step forward” that is taken in the collective commitment to recycling, reuse and the second life of the textile field.

“The protection of the environment is a commitment for us and we want to take it to all areas of the Cabildo. The presentation of this brand is an example of this transversal collaboration of the areas of Employment, Education and Youth and Natural Environment, Sustainability and Safety and Emergencies,” he commented.

This brand, in the opinion of the president, “puts the island at the forefront of fashion and also sustainability.”

In that sense, he said that they want to give a “second life” to the garments and make them capable of reusing and for that it is also necessary to promote the talent in Tenerife and encourage innovation.

Blanca Pérez indicated that waste treatment is a “fundamental issue” and that is why we work with all areas to implement measures that can reduce waste, reuse and recycle it.

“We have to try to turn the waste generated into resources and that is precisely what we are going to do with Tenerife Sustainable Fashion,” he noted.

For his part, Efraín Medina explained that the Tenerife Moda 2024-2027 Strategic Plan is based on three fundamental pillars: excellence in design and production, development of local talent and sustainability and international projection.

Regarding sustainability, he indicated that the fashion industry “faces numerous challenges and it is essential to address them to achieve sustainable development goals and move towards a circular economy.”

AVOID EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION

In this way, he said that emphasis will be placed on avoiding excessive consumption and waste, using sustainable materials, responsible production, transportation and carbon footprint, education and awareness, circular economy, technological innovation, regulatory pressure, transparency and labeling, and global collaboration.

“Through textile recycling, clothing will be given a new life and an opportunity for the development of sustainable fashion with recovered textiles and production surpluses, and an industry that is committed to reuse, recycling and new technologies will be generated. “In short, it is about promoting care for the environment, people and the fashion and textile sector of Tenerife,” said Medina.

The actions of ‘Tenerife Sustainable Fashion’ focus on promoting the use of materials that have a lower environmental impact and that reduce dependence on non-renewable resources, as well as promoting the reuse of clothing through donations, exchange, selective collection and second-hand sale.

Another aspect that ‘Tenerife Sustainable Fashion’ aims to design is the design of garments that are easy to disassemble and recycle to give a second life to the textile and also provides for the promotion of research and development of technologies that reduce the environmental impact of fashion production.

In addition, a specific support line will be established for companies throughout this year.

GIVE A SECOND LIFE

For his part, Alejandro Molowny indicated that it is important to work transversally on sustainability projects.

“It is a firm commitment in which the university community is also present, since the innovation part is also important, as well as the local textile industry. For us it is an exciting project to be able to work on that second life of textiles,” he noted. .

The area of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies will present the brand at the ‘II Tenerife + Sustainable Forum’ on January 25 at the Higher School of Engineering and Technology of the University of La Laguna.

This meeting resumes the initiatives that seek to establish a circular economy model based on the maximum efficiency of the use of resources with the aim of achieving a more sustainable society and lifestyle. Among the topics that will be discussed will be reuse as the main vector in waste management and the ‘Tenerife Sustainable Fashion’ brand.

On the other hand, the Employment and Education area is working to celebrate the ‘IV Sustainable Fashion Week’ at the end of April, an event that aims to raise awareness and re-educate in sustainable fashion through ‘upcycling’ and ‘slowfashion’.
