SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, January 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Industry of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Manuel Fernández, assured this Tuesday that the island has to “lead” the implementation of natural gas as a transition fuel towards the scenario established by the PTCAN (Canary Islands Energy Transition Plan) regarding to the implementation of renewable energies.
“To achieve this objective, we must work, hand in hand with the Government of the Canary Islands, to establish natural gas as a support fuel for the Granadilla thermal power plant, and thus complying with a motion that was approved unanimously by all political groups of this corporation at the beginning of this mandate, by which the Cabildo committed to implementing natural gas in Tenerife,” he noted in a note.
To coordinate the work, Fernández and the second vice president of the Cabildo, José Miguel Ruano, have met with the deputy minister of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, Julieta Schallenberg, with the aim of establishing energy planning for the island of Tenerife with a view to this mandate.
On this issue, both Fernández and Ruano have pointed out that “it must be taken into account that there is an Energy Transition Plan approved in the last mandate, which is currently in the process of modification by the Government of the Canary Islands, so “must address the establishment of a roadmap, coordinated between the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands.”
On this issue, Manuel Fernández has stated that “this is the first inter-administrative meeting of a series in which planning will be undertaken to establish which places on the island of Tenerife are suitable for implementing projects related to renewable energies. , mainly wind – on land and off shore – and photovoltaic”.
During the meeting, the need to expedite the necessary procedures so that Tenerife has an energy storage system, where the surplus of renewable energies can be reserved, was also addressed, since, as Fernández has pointed out, “the system would be ineffective” if there were no storage tools.
