The Industry area of Tenerife Councilcreated in the current mandate, promotes the three polygons located in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona –Las Chafiras, Llano del Camello and Las Andoriñas– within the policy of commitment to this economic sector. The counselor, Manuel Fernandez, visited the southern mayor, Arturo González, to address the situation in these areas and announce the expansion of their surfaces, as well as improvement projects in their respective environments. Both administrations will work hand in hand to achieve these objectives.
Manuel Fernández explained that “from the insular institution we raise the need to work together with the municipalities to coordinate actions that allow greater competitiveness of the industrial sector of Tenerife». That would mean continuing with the path begun of “taking effective steps towards the diversification of our economy and the generation of employment stable and quality.”
The counselor indicated that “in the case of San Miguel, we intend to expand the industrial use area of the industrial estates, in addition to undertaking work to improve the environment, as we have already done in other industrial estates in La Orotava, Santa Cruz or El Rosario, and soon in Güímar.
Fernández conveyed to Arturo González the Council’s desire to consolidate the island area to “value the industry as an element that contributes vigor and solidity to the economy of the Island.” The island’s vice president, Lope Afonso, expressed himself in the same sense after the government council this week. He stated that “employment will be promoted by stimulating productive sectors,” among which industry stood out.
Afonso emphasized the design of development policies in this area during the year such as investments in industrial estates.
Arturo González assessed: “The three areas are practically full and this is how we have explained it to the island representatives.” He emphasizes that “there is a lot of investment pending because there is practically no land available and what there is has prohibitive prices.” For this reason, he added, “the expansion would be positive so that new companies can establish themselves and consequently jobs will be generated.” Likewise, the mayor stressed that “we have also proposed actions in signage or the improvement of services and in this sense we will present projects.” He stressed the need to improve sanitation and stop wastewater discharges, in addition to recalling work in other similar spaces such as La Campana, in El Rosario. González frames the meeting in those that he has been holding with the different Councilors of the Council to learn about the investments contemplated in this year’s budgets in the municipality.
He Master Plan for Actions in the Field of Industrial Areas of Canary Islands (PDAIC) frames the three areas in a broader system, the industrial complex of San Miguel de Abona. In total there are 423,723 square meters aimed at industrial activity in which 352 companies are installed.
The main shortcomings, according to the documents, occur in the sections of some roads or in access difficulties. The development of new pockets of land is proposed. In addition to installing different infrastructures related to wastewater.
The Master Plan identifies twelve polygons on the Island, which are Güímar, Granadilla, La Campana, Los Majuelos, El Mayorazgo, Costa Sur-Buenos Aires, Las Torres de Taco, La Yegua, Llano del Camello, Las Chafiras, Las Andoriñas and Saint Jerome. The two that most need urgent improvements are, precisely, Las Chafiras, and Costa Sur, in Santa Cruz.
