He Supreme Court (TS) has agreed to open proceedings to Aniceto Javier Armas González, senator of the Herrena Independent Group for The iron (Canary Islands), given the existence of evidence of alleged environmental crimes.
The magistrates have adopted this decision after last November the Provincial Court of Tenerife will send a reasoned statement informing of the procedure in which the now senator and two other people are being prosecuted for ongoing crimes in environmental matters. The Criminal Chamber has agreed that the magistrate Pablo Llarena is the instructor of the case.
According to the documentation sent to the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor’s Office presented its indictment against Armas González in July 2018 in which it requests for him 11 years in prison for crime against natural resources and the environment (4 years), continued environmental prevarication (4 years) and against territorial planning (3 years).
In June 2023, The Court of Tenerife indicated the holding of the oral trial for October 24 to 28. After the status of senator for the electoral district of El Hierro de Armas González was subsequently accredited, the Court referred the proceedings to the Supreme Court due to a lack of jurisdiction to prosecute Senator Armas.
In the order, collected by Europa Press, the Supreme Court finds evidence of the commission of criminal acts by the person under arrest, and declares itself competent for the investigation and, where appropriate, the prosecution of the senator.
