SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of Tenerife will distribute 857,543.79 euros among almost 300 farmers in the south of Tenerife with the aim of reducing the extra cost of extracting water from wells and galleries, desalination and producing regenerated water for agricultural irrigation in the Canary Islands.
The Minister of the Primary Sector, Valentín González, explains in a note that “this amount corresponds to a subsidy granted by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands to the public company Balten.”
The beneficiary farmers will receive, in the coming weeks, the amount of the subsidy based on the consumption of agricultural irrigation water carried out during the year 2021, in the midst of the post-pandemic.
That year, the price of energy suffered a notable price increase, mainly in the second half of the year, and this subsidy seeks to alleviate, as far as possible, these extra costs.
In the case of Balten, the main economic cost it faces is the energy used for the desalination processes of regenerated water, as well as all the pumping and impulses associated with these treatments to be able to supply irrigation water to the farmers of the region. southern part of the island.
The wastewater, once purified, must be subjected to quality improvement treatments, in order to make it optimal for agricultural irrigation, and these processes consume a large amount of energy.
