SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The rectors of the public universities of La Laguna and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Francisco García and Lluis Serra, respectively, have sent a joint letter to the media in which they assess the budgetary “efforts” of the Government of the Canary Islands for 2024 and They advocate closing multi-year planning.
In the letter they point out that the draft bill that reached Parliament had an “insufficient” budget increase to meet the demands of both centers such as the increase in salaries, energy costs or the contributions of intern students.
Thus, through a process of dialogue between the universities, the Government and the parliamentary groups, amendments were introduced that increased the 2024 funds by 3.5 million more for each institution.
In addition, the agreement allowed them to incur a temporary deficit next year for an amount of two million per center, an amount that can even be increased with the authorization of the Government of the Canary Islands.
All these modifications, both rectors point out, will allow the two universities to face the increase in costs without undertaking structural adjustments, while showing their “total predisposition” to advance a multi-year financing model that is “vital” to improve prosperity of the islands.
