SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, appealed this Friday for the State to apply an “urgent” solution on the guardianship of unaccompanied migrant minors.
In this way, it proposes that the state government be the one to assume responsibility for these minors, regardless of whether work is being done on regulatory changes that establish mandatory reception quotas between the Autonomous Communities.
“If the migration issue is a State matter for the Government of Spain, the solutions to be applied must be consistent with this commitment. The Canary Islands are experiencing an unsustainable situation from the general point of view of migration, but with respect to minors, there is no wait longer,” he noted in a note.
Today, there are more than 4,500 minors who are under the guardianship of the islands’ institutions.
Thus, he urged the central Government to assume responsibility in a direct and agile manner if there were difficulties in reaching a majority in the Congress of Deputies that would allow modifications to be established in the Minors’ Law, a rule that does not contemplate minors in an irregular situation.
Curbelo stressed that the approval of the Migration and Asylum Pact of the European Union “must be the framework to articulate all European policies that guarantee solidarity between countries”, not without regretting that during this time many of them have lived “with their backs turned.” to this crisis and there has been no “common strategy” to respond to the demands raised.
Likewise, he insisted on reinforcing the surveillance means on the coasts of the Canary Islands, as well as the attention personnel “which are always insufficient”, especially when a high volume is received in territories “with limited services”, in relation to the island. from El Hierro.
Along these lines, he added that the measures of solidarity and reinforcement of resources “have to be in tune” with a foreign policy of cooperation, in a real and well-sized manner, with the countries of origin, “without ceasing the effort to monitor the mafias that operate from various points on the African coast”.
Curbelo also announced that he will transfer this matter to the Canary Islands Federation (Fecai) as well as to the Parliament of the Canary Islands in order to analyze the possible solutions that the Government of Spain proposes, on relevant issues such as the application of new regulations, the modification of the already existing ones, such as the Minors’ Law and economic cooperation due to the costs of the migratory crisis, which already exceed 104 million euros.
