Raquel was the first Canarian baby of the 2000 Effect, but Gara was the one who began the third millennium – it runs from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 3000 – in a delivery room at the Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves Hospital in La Palma. Girls dominated the list of first births recorded in the Archipelago in the last 25 years. On January 1, 2000, to cite the most remote example, eleven girls and eight boys came into the world in the public hospitals of the Islands. In the early hours of yesterday morning the eighteenth girl was born in two and a half decades, for only seven boys. The baby, whose identity was not revealed at the request of her parents, was delivered at 12:26 a.m. at the Insular Maternal and Child Hospital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
