SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, December 23. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The senator of the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), Fabián Chinea Correa, has registered a question in the Upper House addressed to the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, in which he asks for explanations about the practical consequences that it will have on Canary Islands the pact on migration and asylum reached this week by the governments of the European Union, the Commission and the European Parliament.
In the question, the Gomero representative expresses his concern about “the quality of humanitarian care that migrants arriving by sea to the coasts of the Canary Islands will receive”, and also questions the minister responsible “for the real co-responsibility between EU territories when addressing the migration phenomenon” after reaching this agreement.
Fabián Chinea also considered that the agreement reached by the European institutions “is an imperfect pact that, although it has the virtue of marking a common roadmap in the EU on migration policy, also raises some disturbing scenarios, as pointed out by the main non-governmental organizations that work to care for immigrants and refugees who arrive in the territory of the European Union”.
In this sense, he stressed that the pact on migration “feeds and reinforces a culture of strength, of an EU that restricts rights at the level of asylum when the reality experienced in nearby territories, especially in Africa, is marked by violence, scarcity and difficulties for mere survival.
For the Gomero senator, it will be necessary to explain the role that will be played by the regions that, due to their border status, assume the greatest effort in caring for migrants, given that the vision of the EU, endorsed by this agreement, affects granting the most relevant responsibility to the neighboring territories, both inside and outside the community territory. This is the case of the Canary Islands, which alone assumes humanitarian care for the thousands of people who have chosen to enter European territory through the dangerous Atlantic route.
Chinea recalled that a restrictive vision of the EU regarding the granting of the right of asylum can harm these border territories, and flatly rejected the possibility that the Islands end up resigned to becoming “jails for migrants” due to the reluctance of those States. of the EU that reject co-responsibility in care. “The possibility of evading attention by paying an amount for each refugee is undoubtedly the darkest aspect of the new European pact on migration and asylum,” stressed the ASG representative.
In conclusion, Fabián Chinea asked to listen to and attend to the vision of those entities that work on the ground in caring for migrants, and also demanded that the experience of territories like the Canary Islands be heard, “which we have assumed a responsibility derived from our geographical location , but that we also demand a real migration policy from the EU, which places emphasis on legal emigration and respect for the human rights of those people fleeing poverty and war,” he said.
