The Minister of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jéssica de León, announced today, Thursday, the creation of two extraordinary employment plans to reduce female unemployment in Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane.
This was announced during a meeting with the mayor of the capital of Palma, Asier Antona, in which relevant issues in tourism were also addressed, such as giving prominence to the Bajada de la Virgen de Las Nieves in the Tourism space. Canary Islands at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR).
Jéssica de León explained that these two new programs, promoted through the Canary Islands Employment Service (SCE), will be aimed at long-term unemployed women over 45 years of age, so that they receive training and can enter the ordinary market. The main objective, she added, “is to reduce the total number of unemployment, which in Santa Cruz de La Palma stands at 1,252 people and in Los Llanos de Aridane at 1,719.”
In terms of Tourism Infrastructure, the counselor was able to visit, together with Asier Antona, the second phase of the rehabilitation works on the municipality’s Maritime Avenue in which the Ministry has invested 1,773,210.19 euros, through the General Directorate of Infrastructure , Sustainability and Tourism Quality.
“We have committed to studying mechanisms to support the financing of the third phase of Avenida Marítima, strengthening and creating a linear urban environment intended for walking and enjoyment for tourists and citizens,” explained De León.
In addition, he announced the improvement of the Calcinas Mirador facilities in the coming months, turning it into “a first-class tourist resource offering privileged views of the city,” he said.
Regarding the tourist promotion of the Bajada de la Virgen, he stated that they will work together with the municipal consortium to achieve “a fair, beautiful and consistent dissemination of the Lustral Festivals in FITUR with the history of the city, with the aim of that thousands of peninsular and international tourists can learn about and enjoy this traditional festivity.”
For his part, Asier Antona highlighted the working meeting with the counselor, in which they talked about the tourist infrastructure projects that the municipal government wants to undertake, such as the completion of the works on Avenida Marítima or the future Mirador in the Calcinas neighborhood. , “essential to revitalize the high areas of the municipality.”
“My wish now that we are in the Christmas season is that we can have the front of the Avenida Marítima remodeled in 2025, for the Descent of the Virgin, and therefore, we appreciate the commitment of the counselor to study the development of the third phase of the work, which amounts to about five million euros,” he said.
Antona highlighted that Santa Cruz de La Palma is “a heritage city and has the most important Renaissance complex in the Canary Islands, which we must value.” In this sense, she thanked the Ministry for its willingness to take care of the municipality’s heritage and work together to promote the Lustral Festivals of the Descent of the Virgin.
Furthermore, in terms of employment, he pointed out that of the total of 1,252 unemployed people in the municipality, 721 are women, so “the new program announced by the counselor to train the female group over 45 years old is a very good news”.
