The City Council of Santa Cruz of Tenerife has proceeded to activate the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) and to suspension all activities municipal outdoors from 00:00 hours this Sunday. This decision is based on the alert decree issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, given the foreseeable arrival of strong winds that are expected throughout Sunday.
The municipal decision, explains the council, also extends to the closure of municipal outdoor facilities, whether sports (sports centers, municipal swimming pools, sports fields, etc.), cultural, educational, and any other leisure and recreation facilities, among others. which are, in addition to the Rastro, the markets located in the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena. By extension, any leisure, sports, cultural and similar activity that, taking place outdoors, involves the influx of the public and that was scheduled to start at 00:00 on Sunday, is suspended.
Given the expected arrival of this adverse meteorological phenomenon, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council affirms that it began to adopt preventive measures, from early in the afternoon, and activated the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) to face the possible risks derived from the wind in different parts of the city. One of these measures has been to order the closure and marking of several areas of the García Sanabria park; from the squares of San Francisco and Príncipe; from other wooded places such as the Leoncio Oramas parks; Secundino Delgado; La Estrella, Manuel Castañeda and El Timple. Access to the capital’s Las Mesas park is also prohibited.
In addition, the different municipal services are already proceeding this afternoon, says the City Council, to carry out work to secure the different elements of Christmas decoration distributed throughout the city, as well as the rest of the objects that may be susceptible to damage due to the strong gusts. of wind expected in the metropolitan area.
Call for responsibility
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council also called on citizens not to expose themselves to the risks that the expected gusts of wind could cause. Likewise, it is remembered that as a self-protection measure, all unnecessary trips should be avoided during the Sunday day. It is also important to secure or remove awnings, flower pots and other elements likely to fall onto public roads or other homes from windows and balconies, he adds.
The capital City Council also requests the different promoters of private activities to adopt the same measures promoted by the council, thus avoiding unnecessary risks in light of the alert decreed by the Government of the Canary Islands.
