The PSOE assembly of La Laguna has overwhelmingly supported its general secretary and mayor of the municipality, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, to “initiate the necessary actions” to give “stability” to the local government with the eventual incorporation of the Canary Coalition ( DC).
The PSOE was the party with the most votes in the municipal elections of May 2023, in which it obtained more than 23,000 votes and 10 councilors, and to date it has been governing as a minority after failing to reach an agreement with Unidas Se Podemos La Laguna and Proyecto Drago.
The decision of the assembly, held on the evening of this Friday, enables Luis Yeray Gutiérrez to “seek formulas to guarantee the stability of the municipal government throughout the current mandate, until May 2027, and address with a sufficient majority.” says the PSOE in a statement.
Gutiérrez appreciates “the support of socialist militants for a proposal that seeks the necessary stability to continue advancing progressive policies over the next four years in La Laguna. We will act responsibly and always giving priority to the well-being of the citizens of La Laguna when establishing possible agreements for the governance of the municipality.”
This pact in La Laguna it was already glimpsed since the Canarian Coalition agreed to support the investiture of Pedro Sánchez as President of the Government. Asked about this after announcing the meaning of her vote in the investiture debate, the CC deputy in the Congress of Deputies, Cristina Valido, assured that the Laguna Government had not been put on the table in the negotiations, but hours after After confirming their yes to Sánchez, both CC and the local PSOE publicly showed their willingness to agree on the return of the nationalists to the municipal government of the second most important city in Tenerife, and fourth in the Canary Islands.
Although a PSOE-CC municipal pact is more than likely at this point, both parties have to date ruled out extrapolating this closeness to the regional government, where CC governs together with the PP and two minority parties, ASG and AHI.
