The Cabildo of Tenerife has put into service an emergency protection and alert system in the Teide cable carwith the objective of improve security in the National Park. This initiative will adapt the operation and response time of civil protection and emergency intervention devices. ANDThe system includes the installation of a direct connection point with the Emergency and Security Coordination Center 112 of the Canary Islands (1-1-2)which is located in the building attached to the upper station of the Teide Cable Car, from where notification can be given in the event of an emergency situation, activating resources immediately.
The event held today was attended by the president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila; the island counselor of Natural Environment, Sustainability and Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez; the insular director of the Natural Environment, Pedro Millán; the chief officer of the Tenerife Firefighters Consortium, Florencio López; and the director of the Teide Cable Car, Ignacio Sabaté.
Rosa Dávila thanked Teleférico del Teide for “the effort made” to put the SOS point located in its facilities into operation. She explained that «the point allows us to act more quicklybecause it has a connection with the 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands and the resources are activated immediately.

At the same event, the president of the Cabildo highlighted the provision of a logistics point to this space “to serve about 50 people, in case of a major emergency.” It is equipped with rescue equipment, oxygen-therapy equipment and portable stretchers, among other elements, “which are at the disposal of the Tenerife Firefighters, the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) or the Red Cross.”
Ignacio Sabaté, director of Teleférico del Teide, alluded to the importance of continuing to collaborate with the Cabildo and the Teide National Park to improve security in this natural space. In the case of Florencio López, the head of the Prevention, Fire Extinction and Rescue Consortium of the Island of Tenerife, referred to that “the structure of the Teide Cable Car is a fundamental element for the safety of high mountain activities in the island”. At the same time, he highlighted that the logistics center “also has the possibility of sheltering people in an emergency situation and, at the same time, it has a series of materials that would be ready for firefighters and the rest of the teams that act. “This will speed up our actions to attend to the person who is in an emergency situation.”
The SOS button in this spacelocated at kilometer 43 of the TF-21 highway (La Orotava), and the refuge area are some of the measures to improve security in the main protected natural space of the Island and the Canary Islands.
